2 5 th Grade parents have a choice that impacts their child’s high school math coursework options ? Pre-AP Math OR Regular

3 Rockwall ISD and Pre-AP Math 6 ◎ Pre-AP 6 th Preparation for advanced math courses in high school begins in Pre-AP 6 th grade. Successful completion of Algebra 1 in 8 th grade is critical for enrollment in AP Calculus and/or Statistics, IB Math, and/or Dual Credit courses. ◎ Regular 6 th Students who choose the regular path can still prepare for success in advanced math, but they will take the majority of their advanced math courses in college.

4 Characteristics Solid Fact Fluency = Conceptual Understanding and Procedural Skills in Whole Number Operations + - × ÷ Interested in Math – seek why, not just how Will work outside of class when necessary Persist Willing to maintain skills over the summer by using programs such as Think Through Math Can handle grade fluctuations when challenged

5 What’s the Difference? Pre-AP 6th ◎ 6 th grade content + 7 th grade content (circumference, probability, basics of volume…) ◎ Higher levels of problem solving & thinking expected and supported ◎ Content is covered at a deeper level ◎ Fraction Fluency is attained in 2 years Regular 6th ◎ 6 th grade content ◎ High levels of problem solving and thinking are supported ◎ Fraction Fluency is typically attained by students in 3 years

6 What’s the Difference? Pre-AP 6th ◎ Grades are 70% tests ◎ 30% daily ◎ Fact fluency is necessary Regular 6th ◎ Grades are 50% tests ◎ 50% daily ◎ Fact fluency is desired

10 Check with your student’s math teacher for more help with your decision. Feel free to schedule a conference to discuss the options. Students who plan to be in the AVID program should take Pre-AP Math 6 th and 7 th. Have your student talk to older students who have had the experience of Pre-AP/AP Math. The most important decision a student makes is the long term commitment to either program. Suggestions
