- 8 SB Activity 2.6 -

Identify two problems with advertising and the media. How can these problems be resolved?

Look at page 130. Take ten minutes to complete the logos and brands survey. Wait a minute! What does the term logo mean? Is that the same as brand? Let’s practice…

Logos are the symbols that represent the Brand, or company. Eagle = American Eagle Swoosh = Nike CC = Campbell County Middle School Can you think of others? Does this matter to most 8 th graders? Explain!

Why students like or dislike certain product brands? Why is the logo important (or not) to what you wear and buy? Why is it important for corporations to make people want to buy a particular brand?

As a class we’ll read the opening for the informational text, “How do tweens feel about brands” on page 131. After reading page 131, what do you think?

Continue to read the article “How do tweens feel about Brands.”

Look at figure 6.1. What does this chart reflect? What can be added? What message does it send?

You may have noticed, unlike most of the articles so far in this unit, this one is written by someone who is not critical of the media, but who is a member of the media establishment giving advice on how to market to teenagers. How will this help you when working on your SOAPStone?
