John Donne Primary School WOOD’S ROAD, LONDON, GREATER LONDON

School’s Overview John Donne School is situated in the heart of Peckham, a vibrant, exciting and multi-cultural area in South East London. The admitting body is the London Borough of Southwark. It is a Community Primary school, which is part of Southwark Local Authority.

Healthy Schools Healthy Schools supports the link between good health, behavior and achievement through a whole school approach. It helps to equip children with the skills and knowledge to make informed health and life choices and to reach their full potential. We use the PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Emotional) and also the SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects Learning) frameworks to help enhance children’s social and emotional learning at school. Children participate in PE, both indoor and outdoor, for two hours per week. We are focusing this year on Healthy Eating, and have a We have achieved the National status of being a Healthy School and are currently working towards our Enhanced Healthy Schools Status.

Gardening Club The school has two gardens and a green house and they grow food in the garden. A whole school gardening project has been started where each year group will be growing their own vegetable garden throughout the year and recording all of their findings in a class journal.

Clubs John Donne offers a wide range of school provisions. Breakfast club from 7:45am until 8.50am. After School Club facility from 3.30pm pm. Various sports clubs including Multi Sports, Football and Dance. Knitting Club : Children (aged roughly ) are absolutely incredible! They knit beautifully and have such a keen eye for colour. I was even more impressed that, out of the sizeable group that turns up most days, at least 5 of them were boys. Music clubs including choir and recorder club

Cooking Club Observations Virtually all the children appeared to be eating a good variety of food including vegetables. The quality of the food was very high. All the children were friendly and sociable and the School Council children, in particular, took great pride in the quality of the school dinners and their contribution to the production of the meals, from gardening to testing out different international menu ideas. A weekly Let’s get cooking club which provides the children with an opportunity to prepare healthy and nutritious meals. Parents and teachers are encouraged to bring food in and submit menu ideas. Which are then sent for nutritional evaluation. There is an international day each month where different food from around the globe is tried out. The school is very ethnically mixed.

Eco Statement The Eco-Team at John Donne have earned the school a bronze award and proudly display its silver badge, through its demonstration of being a sustainable school. They have several means of recycling which includes textile recycling, paper recycling and also a compost bin. At John Donne, they put Eco friendly views into practice by switching off lights when not needed, and actively striving to keep the school tidy by picking up litter. Their aim is to obtain the Green flag award and make their school even more sustainable, with greater participation from the wider community.
