CLAIM EVIDENCE WARRANT BE READY TO TAKE SOME NOTES!

Claim A claim can be a statement about a character’s: Traits Actions Conflicts

Examples of Claims Missy, from the novel “Thanksgiving in Polynesia”, is angry with her mom. Aunt Rhea, from the story “Thanksgiving in Polynesia”, is snobby and self-centered. Laurie, in the short story “Charles,” bullies his classmates.

Evidence Evidence offers proof for a claim by using 2 direct quotes from the text.

Using Evidence To use evidence you must use transition words. In the novel it states, This is proven by the quote, This is evident in the text,

EVIDENCE Never use first person words to show evidence! I can tell because, I know this because,

Examples of Evidence In the novel it says, “ This is proven by the quote, “ This is shown in the text, “

Warrant A warrant explains why or how evidence is true.

Which Warrant Works? #1 This shows Missy cares for her family. #2 This shows Aunt Rhea is a difficult person, because she is insulting Missy and does it in such a way that she is insulting Missy’s mom at the same time. #3 That’s why Laurie is a bully.

Warrants that Work #2 This shows Aunt Rhea is a snobby, difficult person, because she is insulting Missy and does it in such a way that she is insulting Missy’s mom at the same time. This warrant works because it shows how Aunt Rhea is snobby.

Correct the Warrant Change the warrants to explain how or why. This shows Missy cares for her family. That’s why Laurie is a bully.

Putting it all together… CLAIM Aunt Rhea in the short story, “Thanksgiving in Polynesia” is snobby and self-centered. EVIDENCE In the text it says, “ WARRANT This supports the idea that Aunt Rhea is snobby and self- centered, because she is so quick to criticize family without regard for how they will feel and “toot her own horn” at the same time.
