And so do Kennedy Middle School students!

Food waste is collected in the school kitchen by the chef and cafeteria employees.

Food scraps are collected from students’ uneaten food in the cafeteria.

The rotting food scraps are turned into compost at the Rexius facility outside of Coburg.

The finished compost is sold for plant food. Rexius will also donate compost to school and community gardens.

Remove all plastic containers and utensils and put them in the trash.

The paper plate with food waste can be dropped into the collection cart.

Only the blue and white paper liner can be composted. The leftover milk gets poured into the “liquids only” bucket. The milk carton, cream cheese container and the clear plastic holder go into the trash.

Here’s what can be composted: All food scraps and leftovers, whether from the cafeteria or from home, but pour out liquids first. All paper plates that held food. All paper napkins and paper liners, including waxed paper. All paper bags and small cardboard boxes, like raisin boxes.

Empty milk cartons, plastic containers and plastic bags go into the trash. Plastic bottles and metal cans get recycled.
