WELCOME TO JUNIOR SEMINAR 2014/2015 Middleborough High School Developmental Guidance Curriculum

Counselor Seminar  Counselor Seminar Credits: 1.0  Open to: Grades 11  Each year juniors are scheduled in groups for developmental seminars with their guidance counselor. In addition to fostering effective relationships between students and counselors, these seminars provide interactive dialogue and information on the college application process, post-secondary planning, financial aid and college readiness.

Seminar: GOAL  Put “self-reflection” into “plan of action for your future”  THIS SEMINAR IS FOR YOU!! You take from it, what you put into it. Make the effort to achieve success.

JUNIOR “Seminars”?  Counselor Seminars are small or full class groups that meet regularly with (in most cases) a student’s guidance counselor  1 Credit “Pass/Fail”  Counselor Seminar will be reported on official transcripts and School Profile reported to colleges/post secondary endeavors  Groups will meet during a student’s advisory block  We are planning on 12 “lessons” designed to give students the needed foundation for post-secondary planning (from the beginning)

Seminar Topics  Introduction and Orientation  Career Interest Inventory  Transcript Review - What Colleges Look For  Resume Building  Going to College - Understanding Selectivity  What is an internship?  Post-Secondary Options  National College Fair

Expectations: Passing vs. Failing  Attendance to each seminar  Participation  Attendance (10/12 sessions = minimum 83%; unless otherwise excused)  Final assessment (open notes) TAKE NOTES ALONG THE WAY!  Complete a Pre-Seminar Survey and a Final Assessment  Participation – class assignments and some “at-home” recaps  Registration and attendance to the April/May NACAC College Fair  Soul-searching  Putting your thoughts, insight and interests into action  Ask questions
