Bullying. What is it? DELIBERATE REPEATED EXERCISE OF POWER

WHERE DOES IT HAPPEN? At school both inside and out Playing out Home Work It happens everywhere

WHY IT HAPPENS? Why bullies bully? To appear confident/cool To be in charge To get attention To get things from the victim To make others afraid/respect them

OTHER REASONS Jealousy Because they are bullied To fit in with a gang There are lots and lots of reasons

TYPES OF BULLYING PHYSICAL VERBAL EMOTIONAL STEALING KICKING NAME CALLING TEASING EXCLUDING HUMILIATING

KNOW YOUR BULLY Three types Confident aggressive bully who wants to feel secure This is the one we recognize easily!

KNOW YOUR BULLY The anxious bully This person tends to be less popular and weaker in school This person may have become a bully to hide this

KNOW YOUR BULLY The bully victim This type tends to have been bullied before by others and is, he feels getting his own back This type also tends not to be popular

School will have policy You have the right to a safe environment Your school encourages you to speak out It will investigate incidents fully and seek to resolve the problem

School will help BUT you must be sensible and report it Bullying will only thrive where there is silence and fear Do not have bullies in your circle of friends

Advice and Guidance If you are bullied it is NOT your fault Take action speak out Do not retaliate Do not buy off the bully with presents

DO NOT IGNORE IT Telling an adult will make it better not worse Your school will want to stop the bullying Bullying may be a crime!!

CRIMINAL BULLIES Theft of your things Vandalism of your things Violence against you. If adults punch/kick someone and the police are involved the adult may go to court

Dealing with bullies CRIMINALS ARE DEALT WITH BY THE COURTS YOUR SCHOOL MAY HAVE OTHERS METHODS DETENTION HAVE TO SAY SORRY AND HEAR HOW THE VICTIM FELT HAVE TO DO SOMETHING FOR THE VICTIM TO MAKE UP FOR THE BULLYING LOSS OF A TREAT

WHY ARE CRIMINALS PUNISHED? RESTORE THE BALANCE THE CRIMINAL HAS TAKEN AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE EG BY STEALING FROM THE VICTIM

PURPOSE OF PUNISHMENT TO MAKE THEM SO AFRAID HE / SHE WILL NOT DO IT AGAIN REFORM THEM MAKE HIM/HER SEE WHY IT IS WRONG

DOES PUNISHEMNT WORK? SOME QUESTIONS ARE YOU LESS LIKELY TO DO THE ACT AGAIN IF YOU ARE PUNISHED? SHOULD YOU BE PUNISHED MORE HARSHLY IF YOU CONTINUE TO DO WRONG AGAIN AND AGAIN? THE ALTERNATIVE: BRINGING THE PARTIES TOGETHER TO SEEK TO RESOLVE THE CONFLICT MAY HELP LISTENING TO BOTH SIDES OF THE PROBLEMS AND SEEKING AN AGREED SOLUTION

WHAT WORKS TO STOP BULLYING? IF THE BULLY THINKS THEY WILL BE CAUGHT THEY MAY WELL THINK TWICE BEFORE THEY BULLY DONT BE PART OF THE BULLYS CIRCLE OF FRIENDS HELP ANYONE YOU SEE BEING BULLIED KEEP YOUR SCHOOL A BULLY FREE ZONE
