Presentation transcript:

LITHOSPHERE WEATHERING AND MASS MOVEMENTS ‘Mass movements’ is the term used to define the different ways that weathered material can alter the scenery. The two forces acting on the material are;- Gravity, which pulls the particles down. Friction, which stops them sliding downhill too fast. These slide-shows are all on the Prepwork folder if you wish to copy any notes from them; we will not be stopping in class for you to do this

LITHOSPHERE WEATHERING AND MASS MOVEMENTS There are four main factors that influence mass movements;- 1.How much water is involved in the action. 2.How much of an angle is needed on the slope. 3.How quickly the movement happens. 4.The amount of vegetation cover is also important in some types of movement. 2

LITHOSPHERE WEATHERING AND MASS MOVEMENTS There are some questions and answers in the booklet that illustrate the important aspects of each movement type. Note the degree of detail required at Higher! ROCKFALLS;- read from the booklet, factzone 2a).

LITHOSPHERE WEATHERING AND MASS MOVEMENTS Climbers call these types of screes ‘stone chutes’. Their technical name is talus slope.

LITHOSPHERE WEATHERING AND MASS MOVEMENTS A rockfall and talus slope in Arizona

LITHOSPHERE WEATHERING AND MASS MOVEMENTS SLIDES/SLUMPS;- read from the booklet, factzone 2b).

LITHOSPHERE WEATHERING AND MASS MOVEMENTS The Quiraing in Skye shows spectacular rotational slumping. Spot the tourists?

LITHOSPHERE WEATHERING AND MASS MOVEMENTS MUDFLOWS;- read from the booklet, factzone 2c).

LITHOSPHERE WEATHERING AND MASS MOVEMENTS This mudflow happened several years before the photo was taken- the scars are still very visible!
