Clay Clay - mixture of organic and inorganic materials with a very high silica content and water. Silica gives Clay its distinctive glass-like quality.

Find the definitions in the Glossary, Index, or pages in the book. Ceramics Kiln Greenware Bisqueware Glazeware- Bisqueware that has been glazed and then fired. Coil- Clay rolled into a “snake” as thick as a pencil.

ADDING CLAY!!! SCORE- like tic-tac-toe, crosshatching the two spots you want to connect SLIP- add ONE finger of water over the score marks SMOOTH- put the two pieces together and smooth around the two attached parts, making them look like they are one.

DRYING STAGES 1. PLASTIC- clay is soft and workable, has a lot of moisture, feels wet 2. LEATHERHARD- clay is medium red in color, is stiff but still workable 3. BONE-DRY- clay is red in color, hard, and ready to be fired in kiln
