SHORT FICTION Quiz Review

Define plot structure Plot is a series of events and character actions that relate to the central conflict There are six essential parts of plot: Climax Major crisis Conclusion (Resolution) Rising Action Complication Exposition (Introduction)

Define plot structure Plot is a series of events and character actions that relate to the central conflict There are six essential parts of plot: Climax Major crisis Conclusion (Resolution) Rising Action Complication Exposition (Introduction)

What is the Exposition / introduction? Usually brief(1-2 paragraphs). Introduces character and setting to the reader

What is the complication? The event that starts the story off towards the climax

What is the Rising action? The main part of the story that is filled with problems, events and twists

What is the Major crisis? Important event that leads to the climax of the story

What is the climax? Highest point of tension and release of tension in the story (usually close to the end)

What is the Conclusion / resolution? End of the story, brief and may only be one sentence

What are the two types of character? A character is a person, or sometimes even an animal, who takes part in the action of a short story There are two ways to find out what a character is like: 1) Direct: The author comes right out and tells the reader what a certain character is like 2) Indirect: The author gives information and lets the reader draw their own conclusions regarding the character (most effective way to learn about a character)

What is the protagonist? Give an example. Protagonist—the chief character in the story. Also known as the hero

What is the antagonist? Give an example. Antagonist—the most prominent of the characters who oppose the protagonist (hero(ine))

What is the difference between physical and non-physical place? The physical environment, including weather conditions, may be specifically described. The nonphysical environment includes cultural influences such as education, social standing, economic class, and religious belief. These may be revealed by physical properties in the scene or through the characters' dialogue, thoughts, statements, and behaviors.

Define Mood This is the emotional state created in the reader by these effects The mood created from the sentence is one of fear and suspense

Define Theme a common thread or repeated idea that is incorporated throughout a literary work. Theme= statement about human nature + effect The theme of a piece of fiction is its view about life and how people behave.

Name 5 types of Conflict Person vs. Self: this is a fight that a person goes through when faced with a moral or ethical problem Person vs. Person: this is the fight between two people or two groups of people Person vs. Society: the problems a person faces when trying to overcome society’s rules Person vs. Nature: this is a battle with the environment a character finds themselves struggling with Person vs. Supernatural: the battles against gods or ghosts

What are the 3 types of point of view? First person: Uses the first person pronoun “I” Third Person: Uses the third person pronouns “he, she, they” Second person: Uses “you”
