General John Stark An exhibit of the Live Free and Compute PT3 project

Introduction This website was designed to meet the educational needs of fourth grade students. We wanted our students to learn about one of the most famous New Hampshire historical characters and the origin of the State Motto. Our research indicated that existing websites that relate to John Stark have a readability that is beyond the comprehension of most fourth grade students. Our team felt it worthwhile to design a website in which the content is geared towards an elementary audience.

The Lesson Our website incorporates the following pages and topics: Early Life Revolutionary War Molly Stark After the War

Standards Our project incorporates, among others, the following New Hampshire Social Studies standards: History ( , , , )

Standards Our project incorporates, among others, the following National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) for students: Basic technological operations and concepts Development of social, ethical, and human issues that relate to technology Use of technology communications tools Use of technology research tools Use of technology problem-solving and decision-making tools

Assessment Student assessment in this project will incorporate the following elements: Worksheet, timeline, and writing prompt Group participation Cooperative learning

Reflections During the design phase of the project, we researched the life of John Stark in text and online sources. The information was compiled and rewritten to match fourth grade reading levels. The team visited the Stark Home, the family graveyard and photographed various sites in Manchester and then created the website.

Administrative Support Building principals can encourage their fourth grade teachers to incorporate this website as part of their teaching of New Hampshire history.

Research There are a number of recently published articles and papers that link educational success and online learning. Such sources include the following: Bauer, A. (2002). Using computers in the classroom to support English language arts standards. Hamm, M. (2002). Collaborative inquiry : Working toward shared goals. Kappa Delta Pi Record. 38:3. Milson, A. (2001). Engaging students in historical inquiry using internet resources. Owens, R. (2002). Where do you want to go today? Inquiry-based learning and technology integration. Reading teacher, 55:7. Tumbauer, L. (2002). E-activities : Internet-based activities to expand your history curriculum. Instructor, 111:5.

Step Guides In order to utilize this educational website, students should have basic Internet experience. Teachers should begin by demonstrating how the website functions. For example, a teacher might first present one page to the class, explain that the underlined terms are linked to the glossary, and complete the worksheet as a group activity in order to emphasize the most important aspects of this topic.

Technology To utilize this website, a teacher should have access to the following technology: Computers with Internet access Printer Computer presentation system

Technology What the team used to complete the project: Computers with Internet access Digital camera Scanner Projection system Printer Web site design software (Claris Home Page 3.0) PowerPoint Computer disks/media SNHU - Blackboard

Resources The website includes a page of links to various sites that pertain to John Stark. The website also contains a bibliography of print sources that pertain to John Stark.
