Dot to Dot Benedict Biscop CofE Academy Cuisine

In the UK, we eat many different traditional dishes. At Benedict Biscop, the whole school explored and learned about the various foods we eat. We would like to share these with you.

Nursery (3-4 years old) Nursery made traditional sandwiches. First they took some bread and buttered it. Next, the children chopped cucumber and put in on the bread. After that, they sliced the sandwiches in half. Cucumber sandwiches are usually eaten as part of afternoon tea, along with cakes, tea and pastries.

Reception (4-5 years old) Reception made ‘hedgehogs’. The children put pickled onions and cubed cheese on cocktail sticks and put them in an orange. The finished product resembles a hedgehog. We eat ‘hedgehogs’ as part of party celebrations. We also eat cake, pastries, crisps and dips.

Year 1 (5-6 years old) The children in year one thought of all of the different traditional foods we knew. After this, we choose our favourite. We drew and wrote about them. One of the most popular was fish and chips. Fish and chips are bought at shops specialising in this meal. The fish is usually cod or haddock and comes battered. Fish and chips are served with peas and ketchup.

Year 2 (6-7 years old) Year 2 made Rocky Road. Rocky Road is a yummy sweet treat. First the children melted chocolate. After this, they added biscuit and marshmallow. Next, the children put the mixture in the fridge to set. It is delicious.

Year 3 (7-8 years old) In year 3, the children tried various picnic foods. These included cheddar cheese, pork pies, boiled sweets, liquorice, Scottish shortbread, sausage rolls and scotch eggs. The children enjoyed the shortbread most. Year 3 said the liquorice tasted really strong.

Year 4 (8-9 years old) In Year four, the children made the traditional dessert of trifle. Trifle is made of sponge, fruit, custard, jelly and cream. It is layered on top of one another and topped with sprinkles. It is usually eaten at birthday parties.

Year 5 (9-10 years old) In Year Five, the children made fruit salad. Fruit salad is usually enjoyed as part of breakfast or as a refreshing dessert. The children in the class chopped and diced various fruits and mixed them together with fruit juice.

Year 6 (10-11 years old) L.O:- To write a review. Cornish pasties Today in my class, (year 6,) we all tasted traditional Cornish pasties. They consist of: Potatoes, Onions, Carrots, Salt, Pepper, Beef and pastry( shortcrust). The pasty As soon as I took my first bite of the pasty, a taste sensation filled my mouth. The richness of the gravy and beef made a perfect partner for the sweet taste of the onions and carrots. There was a slight distinctive after taste of spice due to the pepper. The first thing you see when you look at the pasty is the crispy, golden shell surrounding the ingredients inside. The perfect pattern on the pastry looked like a piece of art. Just by smelling the pasty you know what is inside. The aroma of the :Potatoes, Onions, Carrots, Salt, Pepper, Beef and pastry filled my nostrils and will fill yours when you try a ((beautifully) British) Cornish pasty. I would highly recommend this mouth-watering dish you and once you have tried it you will recommend it too! By Autumn and Rhys year 6 In Year Six, the pupils tried a traditional Cornish pasty. The children in class wrote a review of the food. Read it below.
