Presentation transcript:

Change A Child’s Story The Challenge  A new state law mandates 3 rd grade students not reading at grade level to not be allowed to move on to 4 th grade.  This law could impact more than 5,000 local students.  You can help prepare more young children to succeed in school and life by joining Valley of the Sun United Way’s Million Minutes Volunteer Reading Challenge.

About Million Minutes Goal  Recruit hundreds of volunteers to read to children at: o community learning centers o schools or libraries o nonprofit organizations  Log 1,000,000 minutes of reading to school- aged children in the Valley to improve literacy and raise awareness for grade-level reading.  The program goes through May 2014.

Million Minutes Challenge Create a “team” of readers from friends, family, and colleagues. Leaders register a “team name” and invite others to join by sending them to our Million Minutes webpage to sign up. Participants receive a monthly team status report on progress to date. At the end, United Way will reward the team with the most minutes logged with a gift for their favorite reading organization. Program Details
