Do-Now: Choose one question to answer. Some girls compete in pageants at a very young age. How might this impact the child’s development? Explain. When a student is tempted to cheat in school, what thoughts do you think go through his or her mind before they make a decision? Explain.

Agree or disagree? Explain. You shouldn’t cheat in school because cheating is against the rules. You shouldn’t cheat in school if there is a good chance that you will get caught. You shouldn’t cheat in school because then you aren’t helping yourself to learn, to become a stronger, citizens, etc.

Moral development: how individuals ought to treat one another, with respect to justice, others’ welfare, and rights Which matters more: the decision you make or the reasons that you make the decision?

REWARDS AND PUNISHMENT Level 1: Fear of punishment (powerful authority with fixed set of rules) Level 2: Self-interest and exchange (different authorities have different expectations, so serve yourself)

NORMS AN D SOCIAL ORDER Level 3: Conformity to gain approval It was really the druggist's fault, he was unfair, trying to overcharge and letting someone die. Heinz loved his wife and wanted to save her. I think anyone would. I don't think they would put him in jail. The judge would look at all sides, and see that the druggist was charging too much. Level 4: Maintaining social order, fulfilling obligations, upholding laws The only thing I think we have in civilization nowadays is some sort of legal structure which people are sort of bound to follow.

Post-conventional Stage: (> adolescence; formal operations is required) Individuals are concerned with principles that make for a good society even if they oppose social convention. RIGHTS AND PRINCIPLES Level 5: Emphasis is on basic human rights and democratic process It is the husband's duty to save his wife. The fact that her life is in danger transcends every other standard you might use to judge his action. Life is more important than property. From a moral standpoint, Heinz should save the life of even a stranger, since to be consistent, the value of a life means any life.

Parenting styles Authoritarian Democratic Permissive Uninvolved

parents are the bosses; act without explanation, child has no right to question parents. Parents attempt to control, shape and evaluate behavior and attitudes of children and adolescents in accordance with a set code of conduct. authoritarian

democratic children and adolescents participate in decisions affecting their lives; discussion, negotiation, explanations, veto decisions, etc.

permissive children have the final say; parents give in or give up parenting responsibilities—no behavior rules, no expectations, virtually ignoring

uninvolved distant, uncommitted to their children
