Determining the Enthalpy for the Combustion of Paraffin Virtual Lab

To begin… Read the entire lab sheet before continuing with this virtual lab so that you will be familiar with the procedures used. The following slides take you step-by-step through the procedure. You will need to make your own data table for this lab. Be sure to use a ruler to make straight lines and to record all data requested.

Step 1 This is the candle that will be used in the lab. It has been prepared as instructed in step 1.

Step 2 The mass of the candle and the index card are shown to the right.

Step 3 The water was measured out using a 100-mL graduated cylinder. When making your reading, be sure to estimate between the lines and read from the bottom of the meniscus!

Step 4

Step 5 The temperature of the water is shown below. For this makeup lab, you do not need to measure the room temperature. Again, be sure to estimate between the lines.

Steps 6-7 The candle was lit and the water was stirred.

Steps 8-10 The final temperature of the water is shown above.

Step 11 The final mass of the candle is shown below.

That’s It!!! Be sure that your data table is complete. Finish the qualitative questions, calculations, and conclusion questions on your own and turn in your lab by the date your teacher specified. Good luck! If you need any help, be sure to ask your teacher.
