1 The Transfer and Measurement of Chemicals
TECH 382 by Neidig & Spencer © 1990 Presentation by Reginald Stanton, PhD

2 Student Learning Outcomes
Be able to use ubiquitous devices to transfer and measure the properties of materials Be able to use measurement data to deduce higher order characteristics of materials

3 Devices Used Graduated Cylinders Electronic Balances Pipets Test Tubes
Rulers

4 Determine Object Masses
Determine the mass of each object (2 & 4)

5 Determine Object Masses
Determine the mass of both objects (6)

6 Using A Graduated Cylinder
Measuring Volume with A Graduated Cylinder When making volume measurements read the level of liquid at the bottom of meniscus Place a white sheet of paper behind the graduated cylinder to view meniscus Make sure your eye is at the same height as level of liquid Read the level of the liquid at the bottom of the meniscus.

7 Fill A Graduated Cylinder
Fill a graduated cylinder then remove water to the 100mL mark Record on data sheet

8 Fill A Test Tube Fill a test tube with water from the graduated cylinder Record on data sheet

9 Add 5mL to A Test Tube Add 5mL water from the graduated cylinder into a test tube; mark the water level; measure height; empty and fill to line counting drops. Record on data sheet Record on height on data sheet Record drops on data sheet

10 Add 5mL to A Test Tube Add 5mL water from the graduated cylinder into a test tube; mark the water level; measure height; empty and fill to line counting drops. Record on data sheet Record on height on data sheet Record drops on data sheet

11 How to do Pre-Laboratory Assignment-Lab 382
Questions1-3 are found in your discussion Question 4(1): Use formula below, solve for Drop 2 Question 4(2): Use same formula, solve for Volume 2 Question 5: Your turn to think about the answer
