Enthalpy of Fusion

ChemistryName Experiment #17Date: ___Mods:__ Heat of FusionPartner name

Definition Enthalpy of fusion- The energy needed to melt a solid into a liquid

Objective To find the enthalpy of fusion for water

Procedure 1. Mass empty calorimeter 2. Fill calorimeter about ½ full and mass again. 3. Find initial temperature of water. 4. Add ice and stir until temperature is at 4 o C

Procedure (con) 5. Remove solid ice left over and discard. 6. Mass calorimeter with water again. 7. Repeat steps 1-6 for Trial 2.

Data Trial 1: 1. Mass empty calorimeter_____ 2. Mass calorimeter and water_____ 3. Initial temperature of water_____ 4. Final temperature of water 4 o C 5. Final mass of calorimeter/ice_____

Data (con) Trial 2: 1. Mass empty calorimeter_____ 2. Mass calorimeter and water_____ 3. Initial temperature of water_____ 4. Final temperature of water 4 o C 5. Final mass of calorimeter/ice_____

Calculations Calculate the enthalpy of fusion of ice: Ice = water m∆H fusion = m∆Tc (leave 12 lines) Average enthalpy: (leave 4 lines) Calculate the percent error: (leave 8 lines)

Conclusion The enthalpy of fusion for ice based on my data is _______ and ____. The actual answer is 334J/g. My percent error is ______. A source of error is ________________. To be more accurate, I would ______________.
