In 1906, Picasso moved to Gosol, Spain where he changed his style In 1906, Picasso moved to Gosol, Spain where he changed his style.  His new works where influenced by Iberian, and African art.  He began to use more geometrical figures in his artwork.  He began smoking a lot of opium. And quit when a friend committed suicied after smoking too much and losing his mind. Picasso's works began to shift slightly in appearance and theme. His characters had oddly shaped faces, looking similar to masks. Their mask like faces reflected his interest in Iberian and African sculpture. Picasso was interested in African art, as were many other artists of the time.

Planting the seeds of Cubism With Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, the Spanish painter Pablo Picasso offends the Paris art scene in 1907. Showing his eight-foot-square canvas to a group of painters, patrons, and art critics at his studio, Picasso meets with almost unanimous shock, distaste, and outrage. The painter Matisse is angered by the work, which he considers a hoax, an attempt to paint the fourth dimension. "It was the ugliness of the faces that froze with horror the half-converted," the critic Salmon writes later. The painter Derain comments wryly, "One day we shall find Pablo has hanged himself behind his great canvas." In the months leading up to the painting's creation, Picasso struggles with the subject -- five women in a brothel. He creates more than 100 sketches and preliminary paintings, wrestling with the problem of depicting three-dimensional space in a two-dimensional picture plane. The original composition includes two men -- a patron surrounded by the women, and a medical student holding a skull, perhaps symbolizing that "the wages of sin are death." In the final composition, the patron is gone and the medical student -- who has been called a stand-in for the painter himself -- has become a fifth woman with a primitive mask, holding back the crimson curtain to reveal her "sisters." The painting is described as a battleground, with the remains of the battle left on the canvas. The Iberian women in the center of the canvas clash with the hideously masked creatures standing and squatting on the right. Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, 1907

Cubism The name "Cubism" comes from an insult by another artist, Henri Matisse. He called a painting by Georges Braque: "petits cubes", or little cubes.

Still Life with Death’s Head, 1907

Houses With Trees, 1907 Reservoir Horta, 1909

Analytic Cubism The Guitar Player, 1910 Between 1908 and 1911 Picasso and  George Braque painted landscape paintings in a new style.  This style was termed cubism by a critic who described the work as being made of "little cubes".  They created this style by breaking down and analyzing a object.  The main color scheme was browns and other muddy colors (monochromatic color). The Guitar Player, 1910

Synthetic Cubism Still Life with Chair Caning, 1912 In 1912, Picasso began to paste paper and pieces of oilcloth to his paintings and then paint either on them or around them.  These where his first collages.  This technique is called synthetic cubism.  This is a more decorative, colorful style of art.  He has done some synthetic cubism, but not particularly a lot. Still Life with Chair Caning, 1912

Neo-Classical Period Mother and Child on the Seashore, 1921 Picasso cannot be accused of sticking to one style for too long, so if you don't happen to like his cubist period, other images are perhaps more pleasing to a general public. The collaboration between Picasso and Braque was ended by the First World War. After this, Picasso reverted to a more Classicist mode of representation. It is believed that he did this as a reaction to society's disillusionment and shock from the horrors of the war. Perhaps, in its own way, it was a way of returning his own psyche to a state of order and peace. Whatever the reason, this was not a final stage in Picasso's career. He soon continued to produce cubist works again, always finding new ways to express himself with the style. Mother and Child on the Seashore, 1921 The Lovers, 1923

Later Works Girl Before a Mirror, 1932 Dream, 1932 Picasso's later cubist works introduce more color and pattern than his experimental earlier period. These are some of my favorite paintings by Picasso. It is my belief that, at this point, Picasso and Matisse were influencing each other in their works. The two artists are described as having "a friendly rivalry". Girl Before a Mirror, 1932 Dream, 1932
