Pablo Picasso 1884-1973. Picasso was born in Madrid Spain in1881. He began drawing even before he could talk, and his father who was an art teacher, encouraged.

1 Pablo Picasso 1884-1973

2 Picasso was born in Madrid Spain in1881. He began drawing even before he could talk, and his father who was an art teacher, encouraged his natural talent. During his life he created over 20,000 works of art and became one of the world’s most famous artists. There are several museums dedicated to his work. Picasso with his father teaching him art.

3 The First Communion This is one of the first pictures painted by Picasso. It was painted with oil on canvas.

4 Burial of El Greco After the death of a good friend Picasso entered what has been termed the Blue Period. Most of his paintings during this time were painted in dark colours especially blues and greys. This picture shows the burial of his friend.

5 Harlequin with Glass By 1905, Picasso lightened his palette, relieving it with pink and rose and yellow-ochre. He was living in Paris at this time and was developing a great interest in the circus. His circus performers, harlequins and acrobats became more graceful, delicate and colourful

7 Bread and Fruit Dish on Table Next came Cubism. Picasso then experimented with a new movement in art called Cubism. In cubist artworks, objects are broken up, analyzed, and re- assembled in an abstracted form.

9 The Guitar Picasso went on to discover a new form of Cubism and called it collage cubism or synthetic cubism. He used different types of fabrics and papers scraps to create his works. The Guitar is one of the most famous of such works.

10 Mother and Child After the birth of his son Paul Picasso returned to a more traditional type of painting and painted lots of works with the theme Mother and child.

11 Three Musicians Although now painting more traditional works Picasso never abandoned Cubism. This was produced in 1921 and is regarded as his most famous piece of Cubist art.

12 Guernica This was painted in 1937 after German bombs destroyed the town of Guernica. The picture is a giant mural and depicts the people fleeing in the fields from the bombs and bullets from the German planes
