A basic introduction for Grade Levels 1 - 4

What do we know about netball? Let’s brainstorm some ideas:

Introduction ● Netball is a team sport ● Involves passing, catching and shooting goalspassing, catching shooting goals ● Lots of fun and make friends ● Seven (7) players on each team ● Keep fit and healthy ● Played indoors or outdoors ● High skilled and fast game ● Netball is a sixty (60) minute game

Basic Rules ● No stepping with the ball ● Can’t hold ball any longer than 3 seconds ● Stand 3 feet (1 metre away) from player with ball ● Can’t throw over a third ● Must not go offside depending on position ● No physical contact ● Only two (2) positions can shoot for goal

Warming Up ● Warm up to get the body and muscles warm ● Stretch to loosen the muscles ● Take around 15 – 30 minutes to warm up ● Warm up should include jogging or skipping and lots of stretching

Passing and Catching TO PASS ● Step forward and push ball out in front using fingers and wrists ● Aim for the players chest you are passing to TO CATCH ● Keep eyes on the ball ● Have arms outstretched with fingers in a W shape behind the ball ● Pull ball into your body

Shooting Goals ● Space feet shoulder width apart ● Hold ball above head ● Sit ball on hand you shoot with (right hander/left hander) ● Rest other hand on side for support ● As you shoot bend at the knees ● Flick fingers when shooting the ball and follow through pointing at post

Attacking Positions C – Passes the ball at centre pass Feeds the ball into the circle WA - Leads out for the centre pass Feeds the ball into the circle GA - Helps out at centre pass Shoots goals GS - Leads out for ball around circle Shoots goals

Defending Positions C – Defend C pass Keep opposition off of circle WD – Stop opposition from getting centre pass Stop opposition from feeding ball to circle GD – Stop opposition from shooting goals Get rebounds GK – Stop opposition shooting goals Get rebounds

Playing as a Team ● Support and encourage one another ● All aim to achieve common goal (winning) ● Communication ● Positive outlook ● Constructive feedback

Cool Down and Stretch ● Cool down to lower body temperature ● Lower heart rate ● Go for a slow jog or walk ● Stretch for 10 – 15 minutes ● Helps muscles recover used during exercise ● Prevents injury
