TELECOM BUSINESS MANAGEMENT ASSIGNMENT SUBMITTED BY: ROHAN KANOJIA PRN: SYSTEMS & FINANCE BATCH 09-11

Where am i????? What’s around me????? How do I get there????? One single answer to all the queries….. Location based services

Imagine partying in a pub and you get a beep that your friend ( or X GF) is also in the same pub….the party becomes more happening…. That’s what location based services can do.… Location based service is in and India will very soon witness a rise in apps that are built for the local market…. Mobile Location based services are the next big thing that is going to happen in the telecom arena…. Introduction….

Location based services….. Location based services are wireless mobile content services which are to provide location specific information to mobile users moving from location to location….. Unlike mobile (or mobile internet) services, LBS doesn’t require you to enter your area details….. Typically Location Based Services fall under the following conditions: B2B (business to business): e.g. resource tracking ( fleet management, courier tracking etc. C2B ( consumer to business): e.g. proximity based auction services like searching for a business/restaurant etc. B2C ( business to consumer): e.g. proximity based notifications (push/pull): receive targeted ads, location based billing/discounted ads etc. C2C ( consumer to consumer): e.g. share your location with friends, track your friends etc.

Location technologies…. Network-based Technologies that exploit the cellular infrastructure to obtain geo-location information. Handset-based Location intelligence is stored within terminal Each of these groups may be divided into: The MU uses signal transmitted by the base stations to calculate its own position The base stations measure the signals transmitted by the MU and relay them to a central site for processing.

Location Technologies… network-based… CGI+TA (Cell Global Identity + Timing Advance) Cell Size

Location Technologies…. network-based…. 7 UL-TOA (Uplink Time of Arrival)  Mobile  Base Station 1  =distance 1  Base Station 2  Base Station 3  =distance 2  =distance 3

8 Location Technologies…. network-based…. AOA (Angle of Arrival) 22 11

Location Technologies…. handset-based…. GPS (Global Positioning System) D:\DATA\videos\how GPS works.mov AGPS (Network Assisted GPS)

Assisted GPS….

Some examples of LBS applications.…

Poynt: To find out restaurants, movies, shopping deals

Foursquare: For SNS junkies, to find the location of their friends

Ubertwitter: For relatively accurate location tweeting

Google Mobile: To find the location you are in

Challenges…. One of the most significant challenge in LBS is privacy. Users need to opt-in to use the service. Apart from piracy, most of the users will not be comfortable with “somebody” tracking their behaviour (whereabouts, consumer behaviours, and financial transactions, mobile usage etc. )

LBS IN INDIA…. BSNL signed up with a US based firm Telenity 16 to provide 14 location-based services to its customers The service was launched in July 2007 and the fleet tracking solution has picked up an impressive customer base in companies such as Mahindra and Mahindra, Hindustan Lever, Patel Roadways and Chetak Logistics among others At the same time, Airtel launched its Enterprise LBS solution with an Indian firm
