Review 3B Climate and Weather

#25. One reason for convection currents are warm air rising at the equator and cold air sinking at the poles.

#26. Tropical seas have a high rate of evaporation. Therefore, the water in tropical seas will have higher salt concentrations.

#27. Life on Earth is protected from the Sun's ultraviolet radiation by the ozone layer.

#28. The Earth has seasons because its axis is tilted as it revolves around the sun.

#29. The two most common gases in the Earth’s atmosphere are Nitrogen 78% and Oxygen 21%.

#30. Warm moist air is typical of a tropical climate.

#31. At the seashore late in the afternoon on a hot, sunny day, a person often feels a strong breeze coming in from the ocean because the heavy, cool air over the ocean rushes in to replace the warm air that rises over the land.

#32. At the seashore at night, a person often feels a breeze going out to the ocean. Since air over the land cools faster than the air over the ocean the air over the ocean is warmer. The cooler air over the land rushes in to replace the warm air that rises over the ocean.

#33. In some years there are more hurricanes than usual. This is probably because the ocean is warmer than usual.

#34. How can a large volcano eruption effect an areas weather? Atmospheric dust from the eruption can cause a decrease in the amount of solar energy reaching Earth.

#35. As residents of Georgia, our weather is often influenced by air masses that start over the Gulf of Mexico. These air masses usually have warm and humid air.

#36. Water and land absorb and release heat differently. Land releases and absorbs heat faster than water.

#37. Wind blows from ______ (high/low) pressure to ______ (high/low) pressure.

#38. Wind blows from ______ (high/low) temperature to ______ (high/low) temperature.

#39. Hurricanes can form when the sun warms a large area of an ocean and causes a large amount of water to evaporate.

#40. Warm evaporated moisture from an ocean moved inland over a city. The city is blocked on one side by a mountain range. Rain will occur in the city and the other side of the mountain will stay dry because it is in the Rain Shadow.

#41. Differences in air pressure occur because the Sun heats different places on Earth at different rates.

#42. Two conditions that are necessary for frost to form are 1 - the air is saturated with water and 2 - the temperature is 0 degrees C or less.

#43. Dew will be on the grass in the morning when the relative humidity is near 100% and the temperature drops during the night.
