Chapter 5 Starting up

Many accidents occur because the driver was not ready to take control of ATV Know your start up procedure!

Mounting your ATV Set the parking brake Grasp the handlebar with you hand Place your foot on the footrest (don’t step on the shift lever Lean over, grasp the handlebar with your other hand

Brake 1. Set parking Brake

On 2. Turn gas cap vent to on position. Also, turn the gas valve to ON or Reserve position, depending on how much fuel is in the machine. Turn ignition switch on, if so equipped.

Neutral 3. Check that the transmission is in neutral. To make sure it is in neutrl, check the neutral indicator, if equipped, or you can release the PARKING BRAKE and try to roll the machine back and forth. Rest parking brake.

Engine Check that the engine stop switch is in the RUN or START position. The engine stop switch is usually found on either the left- hand or right hand grip

Choke 5. If the engine is cold, put the choke in the on position. Your owner’s manual will show you where the choke is located. 6. Start the engine according to the owner’s manual. 7. Once the machine is warmed up, return choke to normal position.

Ride slowly to get feel of machine

Shifting Gears Always release the throttle while shifting to prevent front wheel(s) lifting Learn the sound of your engine to know when to shift If manual clutch – know where the engagement point is to prevent stalling & allow for smooth shifting

Hints for braking Release the throttle Shift to lower gear to slow vehicle Apply both brakes equally (rear brake first) Do most of your braking before a turn Apply brakes lightly on slippery surfaces Apply brakes lightly after driving through water or wet areas Keep head and eyes up

Parking When parking – Shift into Neutral Stop the engine with the Engine Stop Switch and, if equipped, turn off the ignition switch Set the parking brake to keep the ATV from rolling Turn the fuel off Always try to find flat ground to park your ATV
