PRRS control on commercial farm Thesaloniki, Greece Waldemar Szczurek Poland

Case study 700 sows herd farrow-finnish 2 site production genetics Danbred feed production AI and semen production

Health status PRRS + M. hyo + Atrophic rhinitis + APP + Leptospira + Lawsonia intracellularis + PMWS in 2002

Production results Farrowing rate 83-87% Born total 14,8 Born alive last 4 years Weaners sold last year

Epidemio-clinic description PRRS outbreak 1999 Abortions (mostly 104th day) Weak piglets Stillbirth Irregular returns to estrus

Diagnostic hypothesis Typical PRRS outbreak serologicaly confirmed

Preventive and curative recomendations Vaccines not available Isolation of boars and regular checks of semen and serum Isolation of gilts before introduction into herd Introduction of gilts after ca. 2 month post delivery from fattening unit Use of disposable needles for sows and piglets

Interesting point Since 1999 production is not affected by PRRS. Vaccines were never introduced into this herd. Serological tests were made every 3 month at the beginning, later twice a year, now sometimes. Biosecurity is a main concern.
