Unit 4 – The Judicial Branch Quiz 1 Review

What Fourteenth Amendment clause says we may not be deprived of our life, liberty, or property?

The Due Process clause

If there is a dispute between two states, who hears the case?

The Supreme Court!

Who is John Roberts?

The current chief justice of the Supreme Court, nominated by George. W. Bush, and hails from Buffalo, NY.

What is an indictment?

When a grand jury says to a person, yes, there is enough evidence to hold a trial to find out if you’re guilty or not.

Who is John Harlan?

A chief justice of the Supreme Court, the lone dissenting vote in the Plessey v. Ferguson decision (He should have a day celebrating his birth)

What is concurrent jurisdiction?

When both federal and state courts have jurisdiction in a matter.

What is an officer of the court?

Someone who serves in the court system in some official capacity, judge, lawyer, clerk, bailiff…not a member of a jury, though

How long did it take for segregation to end after Brown?

It took a while, the Supreme Court said, in its decision, “With all deliberate speed”, which is open to interpretation by some.

What is litigant?

Any member of a law suit

What’s a grand jury?

A jury of about 16 to 24, they hear charges against a person suspected of having committed a crime and then decide whether or not to issue an indictment.

What is an indictment?

An order by a grand jury that says there is enough evidence to stand trial, and by golly, you will stand trial to answer these charges.

What is senatorial courtesy?

Doesn’t apply to the Supreme Court, but when Potus nominates someone to a federal court, he submits those names to the senators from the nominee’s state for their approval. Usually, if one or both disapprove, Potus drops the nomination.

What is judicial review?

The power of the Supreme Court to declare an act of Congress unconstitutional… established by Marbury v. Madison.

The End Honestly, I don’t know what more I can do to help you get a good grade on this quiz!?
