Introducing our KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER ACCOUNT (KTA) Maximising the impact of EPSRC-funded research CPD Support and Development Office

What are KTAs? A new concept for EPSRC – ‘These grants will provide funding to help make sure that the research we fund is fully exploited, as well as contributing to the creation of a culture of knowledge transfer.’ Bath was one of just 12 supported (and we are partners with Cambridge in their KTA) £3.4m award over 3 years Supports our wider impact profile, use model to take wider than EPSRC-funded research CPD Support and Development Office

We said we would: 1.Develop an entrepreneurial and impact-driven culture among EPSRC-funded researchers – and get you to ‘pass it on’ 2.Increase the volume of EPSRC-funded research adopted by UK business 3.Continually, review, capture and celebrate the impact of EPSRC funded research CPD Support and Development Office

Aim 1: To engender an entrepreneurial and impact-driven culture Objectives Provide skills to exploit research and train/enthuse others Pass those skills on to others By supporting KT Mentors (£180K budget) KT Champions (£140K budget) KT Fellowships (£680K budget) Training workshops (£30K for training) CPD Support and Development Office

Aim 2: Increase volume of EPSRC research adopted by business Objectives To increase the level of commitment from commercial development partners, or early adopters, to ca £1M per annum New Collaborations with businesses By supporting A dedicated Proof of Concept (PoC) fund (£540K) Partnership Development Awards (£1.5M): for experimental development (R&D), CPD development and commercial exploitation CPD Support and Development Office

Objectives To hold one showcase event per annum Surveys and/or interviews at least 5 case studies per annum By supporting Networking and showcase events (£50K) Feedback questionnaires and interviews Case Study Development from new KT activities initiated from within this Programme Aim 3: To review continually, capture and celebrate the impact of EPSRC funded research CPD Support and Development Office

What is innovative about this KTA? Combination of early strategic interventions by an Impact Assessment Group (“IAG”): –Jane Millar –Jon Hunt –Richard Elliot –David Coleman –David Cockayne –Suzanne Maxwell Establishment of “Adoption Teams” Allocation of both Proof of Concept funds and Partnership Development Awards CPD Support and Development Office

Outcome: “A greater number of economic and societal impacts and a sustainable culture of innovation and entrepreneurship within the University of Bath.” CPD Support and Development Office

Outputs: businesses committed to the delivery, or adoption of new products, process or services £2-3M Investment secured from business Impact Case Studies 2-4 businesses/enterprises created Jobs created or safeguarded CPD Support and Development Office

What’s in it for you? Demonstrate impact: Increased emphasis on impact by the Research Councils (e.g. impact statements) REF: concentration on impact case studies Income: to pay for the adoption of your research by businesses/organisations CPD Support and Development Office

How to get the funds: –Contact Project Manager –Initial meeting to assess criteria –Presentation to IAG –Establish Adoption Team –Submit Adoption Plan –Project Funded –Project Reviewed –Case Study Compiled CPD Support and Development Office

Outputs are from EPSRC funded research Credible - project likely to succeed, research outputs better than alternatives, University owns the rights Potential for high impact - need for adoption of these outputs Type of impact - social, new company creation, safeguarding of jobs, commitment from external organisations to adopt new products, processes or services CPD Support and Development Office What are the criteria?
