Jackie Joyner-Kersee Celebrating Women’s History Month

Background Information Jackie Joyner was born on March 3, She grew up in East St. Louis, Missouri. She ran track and played basketball at UCLA in California.

Important Facts Jackie married her coach, Bob Kersee, in Jackie’s brother, Al Joyner, is also an Olympic gold medalist. Jackie’s sister-in-law is the late track star Florence Griffith Joyner.

Accomplishments Jackie won a silver medal during the 1984 Olympics, and gold medals in the 1988 & 1992 Olympics in the heptathlon. Jackie won a gold medal in 1988, and a bronze medal in 1992 in the long jump. Jackie holds the American record for the long jump, and the world record for the heptathlon.

Conclusion Jackie suffers from exercise- induced asthma. Jackie retired from track and field in 2001 at 38 years old. Jackie started the Jackie Joyner- Kersee Youth Center Foundation to encourage kids in her underprivileged hometown to play sports.
