Background In 1932, over half of Nazi voters were women However very quickly the Nazis set about opressing women and ensuring they had no influence in society

Nazis oppressive views The Nazis felt that women should have an important but subservient role to men. Their main tasks were to look after the home and produce children. The Nazi view towards women was summed up in their slogan – Kinder, Kirche and Kuche (Children, Church and Kitchen).

This indoctrination started early with girls subjects at schools and organisations like the BDM. Married women were sacked from government jobs to make way for men. Marriage loans were given to encourage women to marry and bear children – a quarter of the loan was cancelled for every racially pure child born.

Women were forbidden to marry non-Aryan men. Those who had already married Jews found their marriage cancelled and their children were made illegitimate. Nearly ¼ million women were forcibly sterilised who were suffering from learning disabilities, depression, alcoholism etc Many were forced into abortion too

Women - Analysis Over half of votes for the Nazis came from women in 1932 as many women supported Nazi traditional policies Despite this women found themselves reduced to the roles of wives and mothers If they wanted a career, freedom or political influence they were punished
