The Computing Studies course Pupils are able to study this subject at all levels (Foundation, General and Credit) in the Vale of Leven Academy The course cover 3 main areas Computer Applications Computer Systems Computer Programming Pupils will also take part in practical activities using a computer

Computer Applications This area mainly covers the use of General Purpose Packages: Word Processing Spreadsheet Database Graphics Desktop Publishing Presentation and Multimedia Web Page Creation Other topics also include: Communications & networks Industrial applications Commercial data processing Expert Systems

Computer Systems During this part of the course pupils will learn about: Hardware Software How computers work Different types of computer system: Desktop Laptop Palmtop Mainframe

Computer Programming Pupils will learn to write computer programs using Visual Basic This part of the course is mainly practical as pupils will spend most of the time writing and testing their own programs Pupils find this part of the course highly motivating because of the sense of achievement from producing a working ‘windows’ program

Practical work 40% of the course is practical 5 practical assessments have to be completed and account for 40% of the final mark: Spreadsheet task Database task Multimedia project 2 Programming tasks
