Presentation transcript:

1.Names are important to God. In Scripture, names are more than just an identity 2. God changed names of people in the Bible. a. In Gen 27:36, Jacob meant "over thrower" or "deceiver“ to Israel. b. Israel, which means "princely contender with God". Genesis 32:28

3. Nabal meant "fool". 1 Samuel 25:25: 4. Jabez meant “Because I bare him with sorrow” 1 Chro 4:9 The names God uses for Himself in the Bible reveal His characteristics: who He is, what He is, and what He does.

When we understand God by His names, our view of Him will change.  He will become bigger,  He will become more majestic,  He will become more holy,  He is more able to meet every one of your deepest needs,

When we understand His name is more excellent and majestic, He becomes more worthy of your heartfelt devotion and worship. Isaiah declares in Isa 40:1 that God knows each of us by name. Shouldn't we know Him by His name too?

How many times does God's Word reference the use of His name? In the Old Testament, the Bible references God's "name" more than 175 times. God is very serious for His people to know His name and also :  how  when  where  why

Judgment if we use God’s name in vain –Ex 20:7 What it means to “hallowed’ God’s name? The word “hallowed” means:  to set it apart  to exalt it as being worthy of absolute devotion and reverence.

1. God wants people to know Him by knowing His name! 16 times God says that His reason for doing certain things was so people would:  "know [His] name", -Ps 9:10  "fear [His] name", - Jer 16:21  or that His name would be "declared": - Ex 9:16

2. God cares deeply about where and in whom His name dwells! More than 50 times God refers to a place for:  His "name to dwell" – Deut 16:11, Neh 1:9  or His name being in a person – Num 6:27  His name in a place. – Ex 20:24

3. God cares about His name's reputation! At least 19 times God is doing something for the sake of His name:  1 Sam 12:22  Ezek 20:22  Ps 23:3 4. God cares about how His name is used! More than 30 times God says, not only that He is holy, but: He is worthy of glory – Ps 29:2 His name is holy – Ps111:9

And finally, God simply cares about people knowing His name! The phrases "My name" and "Your name" (apart from the other more specific verses already provided) appear at least 58 times:  Isaiah 42:8:  1 Chronicles 17:24:

The many names God gives us about Himself in the Bible impart to us revelations of:  His character,  His works,  and His relationship It's in the knowing and understanding of God’s names that we gain greater:  insight,  love, With His people.  respect,  and reverence for who He is.

Lord or God is not God’s name. This is actually titled. Of all the names of God, the one which occurs most frequently in the Hebrew Bible is the Tetragrammaton (from the Greek: "word with four letters"), (YHWH). It is the distinctive personal name of the God of Israel. YHWH (written as "LORD" in most English Bibles) "the self-existent one" and denotes God's personal name and His eternality ("I AM").

It is often used in relationship to God as:  a personal Redeemer  and Covenant-keeper Some people render the four-letter (YHWH) name as "Jehovah". God's personal name was so sacred to most Jews that they didn't want to write or even speak it for fear of violating the commandment: Exodus 20:7 Leviticus 22:32

Jewish practice was to read "Adonai" (Hebrew "Adonay"), meaning "Lord", in place of "YHWH" Adonai means master or sovereign ruler and generally denotes:  authority (Elohim means: mighty one It denotes the power and pre- eminence [conspicuous glory] of God). Elohim is the plural for El  and position or strong one";

KJV of the Bible uses the word "LORD" 5557 times. LORD - Jehovah or Yahweh Lord – Adonai Yahweh or Jehovah (YHWH) is the name that God used in revealing Himself to His ancient people. Adonai and Elohim are plural Hebrew nouns? 1. "Adonai" is the plural form of "Adon", meaning "my lord"; 2. The name "Elohim" is the masculine plural form of "Eloah".

Primarily, the name Adonai stresses man's relationship to God as his: a.Master, b.Authority, c.and Provider. Some examples of where the name "Adonai“ is used... 1.Gen 18:1 2.Josh 5: Sam 1:15 4. Ps 68:32 5. Ps 114:7 6. Isa 6:1-4

The name "Elohim" is the first of God's names used in the Bible. Elohim is the name of God that occurs first in Scripture in Genesis 1:1: Elohim occurs 2,570 times in the Old Testament: times in Genesis; 2. and almost exclusively in  Ecclesiastes,  Daniel,  and Jonah.

The name "Elohim" used in Scripture when emphasizing: a.God's might, b.His creative power, c. and His attributes of justice and rulership. It denotes the power and pre-eminence (conspicuous glory) of God and is especially used in relation to God's a.sovereignty, b.creative work, c.and mighty works for Israel.

In the Pentateuch the name "Elohim" portrays God as the: a.transcendent Being, b.the Creator of the universe. Some examples where the name "Elohim" is used... 1.Deut 5:24 2.Deut 8:15 3.Ps 68:1 4. Isaiah 6: Isaiah 45:18 6. Isaiah 54:5
