Exodus 6:1-8 “I am the LORD your God”

Exodus 5v22-6v8: 5:22 Then Moses turned to the LORD and said, "O Lord, why have you done evil to this people? Why did you ever send me? 23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has done evil to this people, and you have not delivered your people at all."

6:1 And the LORD said to Moses, "Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh; for with a strong hand he will send them out, and with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land." 2 God spoke to Moses and said to him, "I am the LORD. 3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself known to them.

4 I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they resided as foreigners. 5 Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the people of Israel whom the Egyptians hold as slaves, and I have remembered my covenant.

6 Say therefore to the people of Israel, 'I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment.

7 I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the LORD your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8 I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. I will give it to you for a possession. I am the LORD.'" [ESV (modified)]

Guarantees..? 5:22 Then Moses turned to the LORD and said, "O Lord, why have you done evil to this people? Why did you ever send me? 23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has done evil to this people, and you have not delivered your people at all." Moses is looking for a guarantee…

6:1 And the LORD said to Moses 6:2 I am the LORD 6:3 my name the LORD 6:6 I am the LORD 6:7 I am the LORD your God… I am the LORD. LORD is the Covenant Name of God * God gives his name as a guarantee! Eternal

6:1 And the LORD said to Moses 6:2 I am the LORD 6:3 my name the LORD 6:6 I am the LORD 6:7 I am the LORD your God… I am the LORD. LORD is the Covenant Name of God * LORD (English) = YHWH (Hebrew) * “Tetragrammaton”, Jehovah, Yahweh * NT Greek: KURIOS (= YHWH or ADONAI) * Meaning? (cf Ex 3:14-15, “I AM WHO I AM”) Eternal

6:3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself known to them. LORD is the Covenant Name of God * Meaning is often best determined by context… * Cf Genesis 2, 4:26, 15:2 etc * Not the literal name itself not known, but meaning of the name not known Eternal

6:4 I also established my covenant with them 6:5 I have remembered my covenant. 6:8 I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob LORD is the Covenant Name of God * Covenant = Contract -> Guarantee * cf Estate Covenant, Sale Contracts etc * In the Bible the covenant is the strongest way to express a guarantee Eternal

6:1 you shall see what I will do … with a strong hand 6:5 I have heard the groaning of the people 6:5 I have remembered my covenant 6:6 I will bring you out from under the burdens 6:6 I will deliver you from slavery… I will redeem you 6:7 I will take you to be my people… I will be your God 6:8 I will bring you into the land… I will give it to you The LORD never fails in his covenant obligations to love his people * LORD = 100% Guaranteed Action Eternal

The LORD never fails in his covenant obligations to love his people * God does not love everyone the same * Cf Egypt, devils, hell etc * Cf Marriage * Needs to be a distinction to be a guarantee Eternal 6:7 I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God 11:7 that you may know that the LORD makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.

The LORD never fails in his covenant obligations to love his people * BUT does not mean trouble-free life * cf Testing time at school * Rom 8:28.. God works all things for good Eternal 6:5 the groaning of the people 6:6 from under the burdens 6:6 from slavery 6:7 from under the burdens Rom 8:28 for those who love God all things work together for good

Jesus is LORD * Mat 1:21, Phil 2:11, Rom 8:32, Rom 10:9-13 Eternal Matthew 1:21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." (ESV)

Jesus is LORD * Mat 1:21, Phil 2:11, Rom 8:32, Rom 10:9-13 Eternal Philippians 2:11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (ESV)

Jesus is LORD * Mat 1:21, Phil 2:11, Rom 8:32, Rom 10:9-13 * Self malediction becomes self-male-action! Eternal Romans 8:32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? (ESV)

Jesus is LORD * Mat 1:21, Phil 2:11, Rom 8:32, Rom 10:9-13 Eternal Roman 10:9-13 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord … you will be saved… For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." (ESV)

Stress..? Guarantees..?

Call on the LORD to remove your burdens! Already one of the LORD’s people..? (The LORD says contract is unconditional!) Not yet one of the LORD’s people..? (easier than PR!)
