Solar Houses in America: The Future of American Cities By the Ben Luebbert Foundation of RPI Engineers

What is the Plan? -Implement solar technologies in urban environments -Convince apartment owners and tenants to adopt solar energy

Philadelphia: -Urban environment -High fossil fuel consumption -Recent debate -Away from actual mining -Increasing population Where will Solar Houses be implemented?

Who will be affected? -Residents -Energy Companies -Government -Environmental groups

How will Solar Houses be implemented? -Solicit environmental groups and other stakeholders for funds -Run a series of workshops to introduce and encourage solar energy

-Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions (CRES), -American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) -American Solar Energy Society (ASES) And now a word from our sponsors

General Themes of the Workshops -Environmental benefits -Financial returns -Human Health effects

How will this help the environment? -Energy is needed for everyday life -Fossil fuels provide energy, but also greenhouse gases -Greenhouse gases cause massive climate change -Climate change threatens life -Solar panels provide energy without greenhouse gases

How will this help society? -Coal and fossil fuel-based electricity is unsustainable -Solar energy is renewable, and therefore costs marginally nothing to power

How this will address concerns about sustainability? -Reduce dependence on fossil fuels -Increase use and awareness of renewable energies -It will be a beacon of light through the smog

How will trends affect the outcome? -Public debate and opposition to hydraulic fracturing -Hesitance to change -International interest in regenerative practices -Existing coal culture

Barriers to Success -Requires outside funding -Target audience may not adopt solar energy -Corporations have the power to lobby governments to stop workshops -Corporations may launch a counter- campaign

Q&A session We would now like to open the floor to questions, comments, concerns, queries, or other words beginning with C/Q that effectively mean question from the audience.
