Types of Questions Perimeter and area Elapsed time Appropriate units of measure Estimation and calculation Using a calendar Comparison

Perimeter What is perimeter? What do you need to know to calculate perimeter? What is the perimeter of the following shape:

Perimeter (Cont.) Which of the following has the same perimeter as the shape on the previous slide:

Perimeter (Cont.) If the perimeter of the shape is 25 ft., what is the length of the right side?

Area What is area? What do you need to know to calculate area? You may get an easy question like this: What is the area in units?

Area (Cont.) This is what you are most likely to see: Calculate the area.

Area (Cont.) Another way you will see this type of problem: The bathroom floor is 12 feet long and 9 feet wide. What is the area of the bathroom floor?

Elapsed Time Basketball practice begins at 3:30pm. Practice lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes. What time does practice end? The movie was over at 9:30pm. The movie was 2 hours and 30 minutes long. When did the movie start?

Elapsed Time (Cont.) How much time is there between the end of “Finding Nemo” and the beginning of “The Little Mermaid”?

Strategies for Elapsed Time Use a clock in the room. Draw a timeline. Add and subtract time, but remember to regroup using 60 minutes in an hour.

Using Area and Elapsed Time Some questions will give you a surface area that is a fraction of a bigger area. They will give you a time that it will take for the original surface area and ask you to calculate or estimate the time to “finish” the remaining area.

Does this look familiar? Willie was hanging wallpaper on the south wall in his living room. It took him 20 minutes to cover this much of the wall. About how long will it take for Willie to finish the wall? About how long will it take Willie to wallpaper the entire wall?

Another way Kathy was painting a wall. She painted this much in 10 minutes. About how long will it take Kathy to finish the wall?

Appropriate Units Jake wants to know how much water it takes to fill the bath tub. Which unit is best for him to use? Quarts Gallons Cups Pints

Appropriate Units (Cont.) Which of the following is the most reasonable distance for a person to ride a bike in 20 minutes? 2 miles 2 yards 2 inches 2 feet

Calculation Kelly was 2 feet 7 inches tall when she was 3 years old. Since then, she has grown 2 feet 4 inches taller. How tall is Kelly now? How tall would Kelly be now if she had grown 2 feet 6 inches instead of 2 feet 4 inches?

Using a Calendar Tyler left for summer vacation on Monday, June 7. Katie left to go to Florida two weeks after Tyler left. Brian left three days after Katie. When did Brian leave for vacation?

Comparison Which list shows the units of length in order from smallest to largest? Meter, millimeter, centimeter, kilometer Centimeter, meter, millimeter, kilometer Millimeter, centimeter, meter, kilometer Kilometer, millimeter, centimeter, meter

Comparison (Cont.) Which list shows the units of length in order from smallest to largest? Mile, inch, foot, yard Foot, yard, inch, mile Yard, inch, foot, mile Inch, foot, yard, mile

Comparison (Cont.) Which list shows the units of capacity in order from smallest to largest? Quart, pint, gallon, cup Cup, pint, quart, gallon Gallon, quart, pint, cup Pint, quart, cup, gallon

Comparison (Cont.) Which is the smallest metric unit for capacity? Liter or milliliter? Which is the smallest metric unit for weight? Gram or kilogram?

Comparison (Cont.) Which list shows the units of weight in order from smallest to largest? Ounce, pound, ton Ton, ounce, pound Pound, ounce, ton Ounce, ton, pound

Measure It Measure to the nearest inch.

Math Reference Sheet 1 foot = 12 inches 1 yard = 3 feet 1 pound = 16 ounces 1 meter = 1000 mm 1 meter = 100 cm 1 kilometer = 1000m 1 liter = 1000 mL 1 kilogram = 1000 g 1 pint = 2 cups 1 quart = 2 pints 1 gallon = 4 quarts
