2 Measuring Up There are two common systems of measurement:
English and Metric (AKA : Standard International) There are six categories of measurement:: Length, volume, weight, mass, time and temperature.

3 Length English: inch- length of your foot
foot- height of a kindergarten student yard- length of football field mile- distance between cities

4 Length Metric System: millimeter- length of insect wing
centimeter- length of a desk meter- length of swimming pool kilometer- distance between cities

5 Using a Ruler Inches vs. Centimeters:
Inches are broken into sixteen parts We use fractions Centimeters are broken into ten parts We use decimals

6 Using a Ruler 23.5 cm 1 4/16 in = 1 ¼ in 21.7 cm

7 Volume English System: gallon- milk quart- ice cream pint- sour cream
cup- sugar/flour ounce- can of pop

8 Volume Metric System: milliliter- medicine dose liter- pop

9 Weight English System (only): ton-ship pound-human ounce-fruit

10 Mass Metric System (only): milligram- medicine gram- food
kilogram- human

11 Time English and Metric:
second, minute, hour, day, month, year, decade, century. The Standard International unit of time is seconds.

12 Temperature English System: Fahrenheit 32ºF = Freezing Metric System:
Celsius 0ºC = Freezing
