Redesigned Course  Introduction to Psychology  Current Enrollment  825 annually across two campuses (Manhattan as well)  Parallel Sections Method –One traditional section –One redesigned section –Both on Old Westbury campus

Goals of Redesign  Standardize all course outcomes, objectives, and requirements  Improve technology usage among faculty  Increase use of active learning techniques  Use a phase in process

Initial Planning  Introduction to Psychology  3 rd highest enrollment of all courses offered on campus (14 sections annually)  High percentage of sections taught by adjuncts  Full administrative support  Faculty consensus lacking…

Initial Planning Cont.  Supplemental Model –Online Mastery Quizzes –Interactive labs –In class activities/demonstrations  Use of Peer Mentors

Learning Materials  Feldman Understanding Psychology (8 th Edition), McGraw-Hill  Blackboard –Mastery Quizzes –Discussion Board –Links to interactive labs  PsychInteractive –User friendly –Abundance of active learning activities

Learning Materials Cont.  Maintained same text book –Only 2 faculty members participating, so no opposition  Plan on switching to Pearson’s Portable Psychology text –Tutorial scheduled for March 24 th –Online activities –Supplements for students

Alternate Staffing  Fall 2008  5 peer mentors –Group discussions –Review sessions – students for progress updates –Selected via interest and grade in Introduction to Psychology –Trained over the summer –Weekly meetings with professor  Preceptor declined position 1 week prior to the start of semester

Alternate Staffing Issues  Finding a qualified Preceptor  Credit for peer mentors –Field placement? –Workshops?

Future Goals  Fall 2008 results  no differences  Re-pilot Fall 2009 –Same professor teaches one traditional section and one redesigned section –Addition of preceptor –Mandatory review based on Mastery Quiz achievement –Pre/Post-test administered assessing interest, perception of course, etc.
