More than 460 million people live in North America. The average density of population is 15 persons to a square km. The highest density (200 persons to a sq km) is near the Great Lakes, in the eastern part of the continent and on the islands in the Caribbean Sea. Less populated territories are in the north of the continent. Greenland is unpopulated. The native population of North America consists of the Indians and the Eskimos. The majority of people are descendants of settlers from Europe. There are also many Negroes in North America.

The greater part of the continent is occupied by three big countries Canada, the USA and Mexico. There are also many small countries in Central America.

Canada is the largest country on the continent. The area of it is 9 million 976 thousand sq km. there are two official languages there: English and French. The country is famous for its forests and winter sports.

The capital of Canada is Ottawa. The area of the city is sq km. the population is over 1 million people. It is a city of both modern and historical places and different styles in architecture.

The second largest country on the continent is the USA. Its area is 9 million 363 thousand sq km. the population of the country is more then 263 million people. The official language is English. The head of the government is the president. The country has got the Parliament too.

The capital is Washington D.C. the area of the city is 0.2 thousand sq km. The population is 650 thousand people. The city is not very big and there are no high skyscrapers in it. Washington is beautiful in spring when cherry-trees are in blossom.

Mexico is the country in the south of the continent. It borders on the USA in the north and on Guatemala in the south. The area of the country is 1 million 973 thousand sq km. Nearly 102 million people live in the country. The official language here is Spanish.
