Nierika Yarn Paintings from the Huichol Indians of Mexico

Advanced Art -Starter How can you design/decorate your folder? The design must include- – Your name – Sketchbook drawings – Work about minutes on this

Starting tomorrow: Art 4- you will need to bring in a photo of yourself-or I can take a picture of you Starting Wednesday-set up times for you to trace your picture with the projector

A REMINDER: Don’t forget your sketchbook drawings – How many are due by next Thursday? – How much time on each one? Look at the following examples of narrative art

The rugged mountains and remote villages of the Sierra de Nayarit north of Guadalajara are the homeland of roughly ten to fourteen thousand Huichol Indians. These were among the last tribes to come under Spanish rule, and their religion still is essentially pagan, revolving around several important agricultural deities.

The Huichols express these feelings through their art, which is made not from the standpoint of decoration, but to give profound expression to deep spiritual beliefs. This makes traditional Huichol art, whether it be meticulous beadwork, yarn paintings, wooden masks, or striking embroidered and woven personal adornments, beautiful not only from its aesthetic standpoint but from the psychological as well.

Each "painting" is made first by spreading a thin layer of beeswax over a flat piece of wood, and then meticulously pushing thin strands of acrylic yarn into the wax to create complex patterns and symbols

Assignment Cut a piece of Cardboard to 8x10 or larger Draw a design in PENCIL on the card board Glue small strips of yarn to fill in area NO cardboard is to show Be Creative (make a design or picture)

Look at the following examples Really think about your design How do these examples differ from your design? Break up your design into a variety of shapes – no simple background –think of how you did the background in your last project Does your picture show all 7 elements?

Newspaper Glue & scissors Wet paper towel Cut a3-4 foot section of yarn –leave the rest in the box

My picture -10 hours of work

Finished work -20 hours

Another Example:

Art 3 & 4 This project is due on 2/?/2012 You will need to turn in the 200word essay with this project

You are to create an expressive line drawing – but you are going to use yarn to complete the picture – You are to show all 7 elements in your design- line, shape, value, color, texture… – Sketch your idea first on cardboard-use yarn to fill in each area
