Major Computer Parts

Computer A machine that collects, processes, stores, and produces information. The four jobs of a computer are: input, memory, storage, and output.

Central Processing Unit (CPU) It is the main part of a computer system. It controls and processes the information. It is often called the “brains” of the computer. Keyboard An input device that allows a person to type information into the computer. The keyboard is a set of raised keys that looks like a typewriter.

Monitor A device that displays computer output on a screen. It is an example of an output device. A “touch” monitor could be an example of an input device. Mouse An input device that has the rolling ball on the bottom. It is used to move the cursor and select items on a computer screen.

Trackball An input device that has the rolling ball on the top. It is used to move the cursor and select items on a computer screen. Disk Drive A device that reads data from and writes data onto a disk. The disk can be a hard disk – removable or fixed; a floppy disk. It is an example of an input and output device.

CD – ROM Drive A device used for storing large amounts of data up to 1 GB. CD-Roms can be an input and an output device. Disk A device that stores data and programs and ca n be an input and an output device. Three types of disks – floppy disks, hard disks, and removable cartridges.

Printer An output device that prints text or illustrations onto paper. There are three major types of printers: dot matrix, ink jet, and laser. However, other printers such as line printers and thermal printers are still used in some companies.
