Tutorials Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films Advanced Many programs let you make professional-looking videos. Not all programs work the same way, but they all help you do the same tasks.

Tutorials Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films Start with your storyboard. This showed how your video would be made up of each scene. Use your storyboard to help you edit your clips into the right order. Advanced

Tutorials Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films Connect your camera to your computer and upload your clips. The computer should recognise the camera and let you choose where to save them. Create a new folder for your project and add your video clips. Advanced

Tutorials Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films Take the time to view each clip and give it a name. Give each scene on your storyboard a code number. Name all the clips for each scene using the same code. Eg ‘scene2take3’ Advanced

Tutorials Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films Video editing software usually has three main panels. The ‘player’ panel lets you view your video as you work on it. The ‘timeline’ lets you add, arrange and edit video and audio clips. The ‘toolbar’ or panel at the top allows you to make changes to each clip. Advanced

Tutorials Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films Add your video clips to the timeline area. To do this: Open your file viewer or explorer and drag files. Or Click the toolbar button or menu to add videos. Advanced

Tutorials Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films Click and drag to move each clip until they are in the right order. Use the player to view your clips as you do this. You are now ready to edit your clips, and trim, split and join them. Advanced

Tutorials Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films Choose when to start and end each clip. This lets you use just the bits you want to include. Click on a clip to select it. You can use buttons to select the start and end points. Review the clip in the player. Pause the player at your chosen points then click on the correct button. You may instead be able to use sliders to set the start and end points of your clips. Advanced

Tutorials Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films You can split a long clip into shorter sections using the ‘split tool’. This is helpful if you want to split up a conversation and switch between shots. Click on a clip to select it. Review the clip in the player. Pause the player where you first want to split the clip, then click on the button. Drag the split sections to where you want them. Repeat this to split a long clip into many sections. Advanced

Tutorials Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films You can copy, cut and paste clips just like text in a word processor. Use: CTRL + X to cut a clip CTRL + C to copy it CTRL + V to paste it Advanced

Tutorials Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films Set the volume of each video clip. Play your video to make sure all the clips are at the same volume. You can choose to fade sounds in and out at the start and end of clips. Fade in at the start of a scene. Fade out at the end of a scene. It is best not to fade between clips in the same scene. Advanced

Tutorials Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films The ‘Transitions’ or ‘Animations’ menu lets you choose how to change from one clip to the next. These can ‘tell’ viewers that a new scene is starting. To add an effect between Clip 1 and Clip 2, you should either: Drag your chosen effect between Clip 1 and Clip 2. Or Select Clip 2 and then select your effect. Fade in at the start of a scene. Fade out at the end of a scene. It is best not to fade video between clips in the same scene. Advanced

Tutorials Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films You can add audio to your finished video. For a drama, this might be music or sound effects. For a documentary, it might be the narration. Import each audio clip, then drag it onto your timeline to choose where it goes. Advanced

Tutorials Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films Make sure your audio does not get mixed up with important dialogue in your clips. You can choose how loud to have your dialogue and your music. This may be something you set for the whole project, not for individual clips. Advanced

Tutorials Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films You can fade each audio clip in and out. Music is best not faded at the start, but fading out music works well. You can also set the start point and end point for audio clips, like you can for video. Advanced

Tutorials Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films Keep watching your video as you work on it. This will help you spot where it needs editing so it flows well and looks professional. When your video is finished, you can add titles, captions and credits. Advanced

Tutorials Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films Edit each title so it looks how you want. Choose the font, size, colour and style. Then choose how your titles will appear on the screen. Advanced

Tutorials Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films Show your video to others as you work on it. They will spot things you have missed and help you make the best video you can. Advanced

Tutorials Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films Remember to save your video project as you work on it. The file menu on your video editing software will let you export it in different sizes and formats, for high-quality viewing or sharing on phones and social media sites. Advanced
