Energy Efficiency – it makes sense! Ken Curry Energy Efficiency Manager

The Big Picture! Why Energy Efficiency makes sense to a utility! Why Energy Efficiency makes sense to a homeowner! What will we cover?

Fact The US represents about 5% of the world population The US consumes about 25% of the total energy utilized in the world United States Energy Usage and Efficiency: Measuring Changes Over Time, Energy Information Administration, datawww.eia.doe.gove/emeu/efficiency/wec98.htm

World Population Prospects: the 1998 Rev Vol I; Comprehensive Tables (UN Sales No. E.99.XIII.9)00

Energy Consumption and Income are Linked 5 billion low-income people in countries with rapid economic growth rates

So what are our future Generation Options?  Wind  Solar  Coal  Nuclear  Natural Gas All have benefits – but all will take time – except Energy Efficiency!!!

Why does Energy Efficiency make sense for a utility? 9  Positively impacts the size and timing of future power plants  It is our least cost near term resource  Increasing energy costs and environmental consideration support increased focus on efficiency  Bottom Line -- As Public Power, helping our customers save energy – is the right thing to do!

Energy Efficiency – our Least Cost Resource!  Range for Costs for Energy Efficiency $.01 to $.03/kWh  NPPD’s near term avoided costs are higher than this! Alternatives$/KW Coal $4000+ Wind$2000 Nuclear $6000+ Efficiency$200 - $800 Source – based on EPRI 2006 TAG with market adjustments – order of magnitude numbers Our most cost-effective resource is to invest in our customers to save energy and reduce peak demand

 CFL in store promotion (fall 2008)  Commercial, Industrial and Area Lighting Incentives  High Efficiency Heat Pumps Incentives  Refrigerator/Freezer Recycling program  Irrigation Incentives  On-line tools (nppd.com and 23 wholesale customers)  More to come in EnergyWise Programs – Investing in our Customers! 12

Why does EE make sense to a homeowner? Lowers their energy costs! Improves their comfort! Positions them for the unknowns and volatility of the future!

Where should a homeowner start?? Caulk & Weatherstrip! Seal holes and gaps! Install Compact Fluorescent Lamps! Insulate! Install a low flow showerhead and turn down the temperature setting on your water heater! Shut off your “plug loads” – (big screens, games, etc.) – use a power strip!!! Install a programmable thermostat – understand it and use it! Maintain your heating / cooling system (replace filters and have it “tuned up”) Evaluate the efficiency of your heating / cooling system (only after your house is weatherized and insulated!) Way down on the list is windows!!

Summary Energy Efficiency is a utilities lowest-cost future resource option – and we can do it today! It makes sense (and saves $) for our customers! We all can make a difference and can lead by example! Our world is changing! Many unknowns – but Energy Efficiency makes sense!!
