The Human Body Corporation This Webquest was modified from quests at and

Introduction You are a body organ, employed with the Human Body Corporation. Due to recent cost increases, the Human Body has been forced to lay off some of its workers. Because you are terrified of losing your job, you have decided to write a letter and present it to the executives of the Human Body Corporation (your classmates), defending your position in the company. You must be persuasive, and clearly explain the relevance of your role, as the company is quite large, and usually only notices any given department when there are 'internal problems!' Good luck - the company's future 'health' depends on you!

Task For this Webquest, you and your assigned partner must create a PowerPoint presentation to show to the executives of the Human Body Corporation (i.e. your classmates). In your presentation, you must answer the following questions: What is your name? (i.e. the name of the organ) What do you look like? Where are you found within the Human Body Corporation? What 'department(s)' [i.e. body system(s)] do you work with, within the Human Body Corporation? What is your job within the department(s)? What other organs are involved in your department(s)? Why are you an important employee of the Human Body Corporation? What would happen to the Human Body Corporation if you were 'fired'?

Process Working cooperatively with your assigned partner, you will: 1.Decide what organ you will personify in your presentation. One person will research information on the organ, while your partner will study the systems that your chosen organ is involved with. 2.Use the given links to find information on your organ and the related system(s) that it works with. 3.Create your PowerPoint presentation. Your slides should include the following information:

Process Slide 1: Title Slide – Please include the name of your organ and the authors of the presentation. Slide 2: Organ Characteristics – What do you look like? – Where are you found within the Human Body Corporation (body system)? – What are three interesting facts about you, as a body organ? Slide 3: Body System – What other organs make up your department (body system)? – What is the role of department? – What is your job within your department? Slide 4: Illustration – Include a labeled diagram or picture of your department (body system).

Process Slide 5: Problems and Diseases – What would happen to the Human Body Corporation if you were ‘fired’? Some things to consider: What systems would shut down? Would the body develop a disease? If yes, how would this disease affect how the body functions? Slide 6: Remaining a Part of the Human Body – Why should the Human Body Corporation keep you? Slide 7: Resources – List the resources you used, including Internet addresses.

Resources Science Fact File: Inside The Human Body Your Gross and Cool Body This Way to My Body Human Body Project

Evaluation The evaluation of your assignment will be divided into three sections: a) group work; b) the PowerPoint; and c) the presentation. Follow the rubric given to you at the beginning of the project for the best possible grade.

Conclusion I hope that you have found your time as an employee of the Human Body Corporation to be both fun and educational. You should now clearly understand the structure and function of a variety of organs, and their roles within the major systems of the body. You should also be able to recognize the difficulties which can arise when organs malfunction, and why it is important to look after your body.
