French & Indian War George Washington lead the Indians. The French and Indian War Started in Washington had 150 men. The French had twice as many troops. Although Washington lost the battle he gained valuable experience.

Albany Plan of Union In 1754 seven colonies sent representatives to a congress in Albany, New York. Ben Franklin made a proposal called the Albany Plan of Union. Ben Franklin wanted the colonies to join together to fight the French. The Colonists won.

Pontiac’s Rebellion With the defeat of the French, British colonist began moving west of the area French had claimed. An Ottawa chief from the Great Lakes region united several Native American nations to stop them. In response, the British government issued Proclamation of 1763.

Treaty of Paris In 1763, The Treaty of Paris ended the war and changed boundaries dramatically. France lost all land claims in North America. The cost of this protection caused trouble between Britain and its colonies.

Townshend Acts The Townshend Acts taxed paint, paper, glass, lead, tea were very strong. The colonists wanted to be taxed only by their own lawmakers. The colonists called themselves the Daughters of Liberty, Sons of Liberty.

Boston Massacre On March 5, 1770 Boston exploded. The group, led by Crispus Attucks and others, began to throw snowballs at a British soldier on duty. Attucks and two other men lay dead. Two more would die later from their wounds.

The Tea Act After the Boston Massacre, the colonies stayed calm for a few years. They kept tax on one product-tea to show the colonists that Britain still had the right to tax them. Parliament passed the tea act in The Sons of Liberty had a secret plan.

The Boston Tea Party On a December evening in 1773, the Sons of Liberty held what would soon become the most famous ”tea party in history. They hauled 342 chests of tea on deck and dumped them overboard.

Intolerable Acts Parliament, British public, and especially King George III were outraged by it. For months Parliament debated how to punish the colonists. In the spring of 1774 they passed what the English called the Coercive Acts.

Battle of Lexington and Concord Some of the colonists responded by preparing to fight. That night, two men, Paul Revere, and William Dawes, snuck out of Boston on horseback to tell everybody that the British were coming.

Battle of Bunker Hill On June 23, 1775, Washington headed to Boston to take command of his new army. On the night of June 16, 1,000 minutemen marched in the dark to Bunker Hill. The British won.

Olive Branch Petition On July 5, 1775 the colonists voted to send King George III a petition. This petition was called the Olive Branch Petition. In it they begged King George III to bring about a happy and permanent reconciliation. The King refused, calling the colonists rebels.

Declaration of Independence Jefferson spent two weeks writing and rewriting the Declaration of Independence. On July 4,1776, Congress officially approved the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson wrote the words all men are created equal.
