1 Directions: Using a scratch piece of paper, make two cards. Label one card fact and the other fib. When I put the statement on the screen decide whether it is a fact or fib. When I say go, lay down your card. Whoever plays the write card, gets a point!

2 Fact or Fib: Statement 1 The Proclamation of 1763 banned colonial settlement west of the Appalachians. FACT

3 Fact or Fib: Statement 2 The Sugar act lowered the tax on molasses to stop smuggling caused by the Navigation Acts. FACT

4 Fact or Fib: Statement 3 The Stamp Act taxed all imported good (tea, glass) and included the Quartering Act. FIB The Townshend Acts did all this. The Stamp Act taxed all printed materials.

5 Fact or Fib: Statement 4 The Boston Massacre was a Boston protest that led to death of colonists by British soldiers. FACT

15 Fact or Fib: Statement 14 The Olive Branch Petition was written by Thomas Jefferson to declare independence. FIB The petition was the colonies’ last attempt to declare loyalty to Britain and ask for cancellation of all acts.

17 Fact or Fib: Statement 16 The Declaration had 5 parts and was officially adopted on July 4, 1776. FIB The date is correct, but it only had 4 parts. A preamble, declaration of rights, grievances, and declaration of independence.

18 Fact or Fib: Statement 17 Nathan Hale was an army general who switched to the British side during the war. FIB This describes Benedict Arnold. Nathan Hale was a patriot spy who was hung by the British. His famous last words – “I regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”

22 Fact or Fib: Statement 21 The Marquis de Lafayette was a Prussian military officer who helped trained the Continental Army at Valley Forge. FIB This describes Frederich von Steuben. Lafayette was a French aristocrat who served as Washinton’s aide during most of the war.

23 Fact or Fib: Statement 22 FACT Loyalist or tories were colonists who were loyal to Britain and opposed the war for Independence.

24 Fact or Fib: Statement 23 FACT At the Battle of Bunker Hill in June of 1775, the British realized that defeating Americans would be difficult.

25 Fact or Fib: Statement 24 FACT The Battle of Saratoga was the turning point of the war and convinced the French to support the Americans.

26 Fact or Fib: Statement 25 Valley Forge was the battle where Benedict Arnold first met up with the army after betraying the Patriots. FIB Valley Forge is where the colonists spent the winter of 1777-78 and endured many hardships. The rest I made up. ;-)

27 Fact or Fib: Statement 26 George Washington lost at the battle of Trenton when the Hessians did a surprise attack on Christmas day. FIB Well, actually Washington won because he and his troops surprised the Hessians on Christmas Day.

28 Fact or Fib: Statement 27 FACT The Battle of Yorktown marked the end of the war when Cornwallis surrendered after he was surrounded by the Continental Army and French.

29 Fact or Fib: Statement 28 The Treaty of Paris kicked Britain out of North America. FIB It recognized American independence and them the Northwest Territory. Britain was allowed to keep Canada.
