Agenda  Summer Learning Loss and Weight Gain  SummerQuest Specifics  What is SummerQuest?  Enrollment, Attendance, and Early Release  Student Conduct and Discipline  The Day and Additional Information  Questions

Summer Learning Loss and Weight Gain

Did you know…  During the school year, the skills of low income students improve at the same rate as their more advantaged peers BUT  Studies show that over the summer, many of these students show no academic growth at best, and a loss of one to three months of learning, at worst!

What is Summer Learning Loss?  Due to lack of school instruction, students can begin losing the learning they gained during the school year, especially in  Reading  Spelling  Math

Children and Summer Weight During the summer:  Children can gain weight three times faster than during the regular school year  This can amount to gaining as much weight during a 3-month summer than during the entire 9-month school year

SummerQuest SummerQuest Elementary Summer Learning Program

What is SummerQuest?  SummerQuest is an engaging summer learning program that provides your child with access to high quality reading, writing and social skill development opportunities.  The program will run for 6-weeks  From June 18 th through July 26 th  Monday-Thursday  From 8AM-2PM  Breakfast & Lunch will be provided

What will students do?  As a site, students will:  Study an existing country  Work together to create an imaginary sister country  Create every aspect of that imaginary country by using information from the existing country  Participate in an end of the summer “Olympics” event

SummerQuest Program Goals  Our program will give students the opportunity to:  Be engaged in active learning opportunities that are aligned with Common Core and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Standards  Participate in health awareness and physical fitness activities  Develop and enhance leadership and peer collaboration skills

Student Outcomes  Students will strengthen or advance their current grade level reading skills  Each SummerQuest community site will strive to collectively read 100,000 pages  Students will acquire the skills to work collaboratively with their peers and to resolve issues in constructive ways

Enrollment Policy  For incoming 1 st -6 th grade students  Complete and submit an application at the SummerQuest Orientation  Submitting an application does not guarantee enrollment  Final enrollment status will be communicated to each applicant by June 6 th

Attendance  Students are expected to be present everyday of program from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm  Children can only miss two (2) days of program  Barring exceptions, students are expected to be signed out at 2PM from program daily  Excessive late pickups can lead to removal from the program  If a student is not picked up by 3:00, it is our duty to notify Child Protective Services

Student Conduct Students are expected to conduct themselves similar to how they would during a regular school day  Be respectful to self, others, and school  Be responsible for their personal belongings  Use the program equipment appropriately

Discipline Policy Our discipline policy is designed to work with our students and parents to resolve issues and consist of the following: 1. Check in with student and give a verbal warning 2. If behavior continues, student is asked to reflect on their behavior and parent is contacted. Student may also lose activity participation privileges 3. For repeated or serious issues, student may be suspended for one or more days and parent will be asked to pick them up immediately.

Additional Information  Students may have the chance to attend SummerQuest Field Trips paid for by SCUSD  All adults on staff are Mandated Reporters  Please be sure to indicate if you give permission for pictures or video of your student to be used in marketing & reporting materials.
