Climate Information and Sustainable Development As understanding of the climate system grows and society becomes more aware of the potential opportunities from this knowledge, demand is developing for new and better climate services

AdaptationMitigation Climate Observations (NMHSs, GCOS, GEO, etc. ) The Climate Risk Management Challenge Anthropogenic Climate Variability Natural Climate Variability

AdaptationMitigation Climate Observations (NMHSs, GCOS, GEO, etc. ) The Climate Risk Management Challenge Anthropogenic Climate Variability Natural Climate Variability Research (WCRP, ESSP, etc.) Assessment (IPCC) Policy (UNFCCC) Global Framework for Climate Services

The Challenge To provision of adequate and timely climate information and its appropriate use is two-fold: 1.developing a system for production and delivery of climate information, spanning global to local scales, and 2.ensuring an effective uptake of the information by decision makers in different sectors.

622/02/2014 Climate Predictions The IPCC process provides useful information for the time post But there is a conspicuous information gap to support management of regional and shorter term climate risks. Information gap

Global Framework for Climate Services Goal Enable climate adaptation and climate risk management through the incorporation of science-based climate information and prediction into policy and practice at all levels.

Objectives Global Framework for Climate Services Enhance understanding and responding to the risks and opportunities; Improve climate information for the development of natural resources, protection of lives, livelihoods and property; Provide user-defined climate and climate-relevant information –at global, regional, national, local and sectoral levels –in a timely, understandable and easily available manner Promote the confident and frequent use of climate and climate- relevant information for economic efficiency, social well-being and development of policies for sustainable development.
