2.6 Story Diagram Plot Elements Review: Open to your journals to the literary terms section and label: As we look at the definitions on page 105, let’s label where each goes on the plot graph below. -setting -exposition -complications -climax -falling action -resolution/denouement -character -theme -conflict

Identify Plot Elements in “Cask of Amontillado” In small groups, you will look back over the story “Cask of Amontillado.” Take a highlighter and highlight and label each element of the short story. For example, as you locate details related to setting, you might highlight them in yellow and mark label it as “setting.” Then, turn to page 106. Fill in the appropriate sections of the story diagram. Hold off on doing the last box on page 106 labeled Other Literary Elements Present. We will do this box as a group.

2.7 Irony in “The Cask of Amontillado” You reviewed a definition of irony in the previous activity. One type of irony, verbal irony, occurs when a speaker or narrator says one thing while meaning the opposite. For example, when Fortunato proposes a toast to the dead buried in the crypts around them, Montresor adds, “And I to your long life.” Montresor is using verbal irony here, as he intends to end Fortunato’s life very soon. Provide some examples of your own in the space provided for you at the top of page 107.
