Proposition de trace écrite … (3 ème // B1) There are very few people (characters) in Hopper’s paintings :. = We can hardly fail to notice there are …… They are often alone and always look quite sad, unhappy. Others look bored, uninterested in what is around them ; they seem to be lost in their own world. Loneliness is the dominant theme in his works. The scenes often take place in hotels, diners or apartments ; the streets are empty. Most of his paintings are urban landscapes though (even if) he also painted rural scenes, or seascapes. He makes commonplace scenes look beautiful. We can’t say the atmosphere is pleasant or light ; most of the time it is quite heavy. Hopper’s paintings are realistic. He probably wants us to feel empathy with his characters. We are made to understand and share their sad thoughts. Hopper is fascinated by shadow and light. The colours are deep and the light often enhances the darkness. He struggled for years to sell a painting but he is today one of the most popular American artists.
