2 Rococo The Rococo Style began as a style of decoration in France in the 1700’s. The Rococo style is marked by the use of lots of mirrors and gold. It is playful, showy, and luxurious. Some things to notice about Rococo design: –The use of light colors and light- feeling furniture; there is nothing “heavy” in this room. –The features in the room are really flat against the walls. –There are a lot of straight lines in the room design. –The use of lots of gold The decorations are meant to be light and playful, creating the perfect room for a fancy party. 3 Fragonard Even though the Rococo style began in furniture and decorative arts, the style was used in painting as well. One Rococo painter was Jean-Honore Fragonard. Fragonard was born in Paris, France, in 1732 – more than 275 years ago! He studied with many famous artists of his time and became a very popular painter. He is best known for works of gaiety and frivolity. What do you notice about this painting? –Notice that someone is swinging her. –Her shoe is flying off. How do the people in this painting feel? How can you tell? What do you think of this painting? Would you like to be on that swing? The Swing

4 The Confession of Love Rococo paintings are often about love. Do you think this painting is about love? Why? What is happening in this picture? How can you tell? –Notice the parasol. They have likely stopped for a rest on their walk. Nature often plays a big part in Rococo art. What parts of Nature do you see in this painting? Rococo artists tried to paint pretty paintings. Do you think this painting is pretty? What makes it pretty?

5 The Progress of Love: The Pursuit What do you think is happening in this painting? Look at the different colors in this painting. What colors do you see? Notice that the sky and trees are kind of dark, and the people are very bright. Why do you think the artist did this? –To draw the eye to the people in the painting Do you like this painting?

6 The Love Letter How is this painting different from the other paintings we have looked at today? How is it the same? What do you think is happening in this painting? This painting is called “The Love Letter.” If you didn’t know the title of the painting, would you be able to guess that something about love was happening here? How would you know?
