English Language Arts and Reading First Grade *My goal is to make sure kids understand the importance of a book and why you need to know the different parts of a book before reading.

Having a kid love to read is a dream come true! I think it’s very important for kids to know what they’re actually reading! They need to know why it’s important to actually know the book. I love to read, and I want all my students to love to read as well! I want to make sure my students understand that there are many different parts of a book, and what each different part functions as.

Technology is definitely something I will incorporate with teaching this lesson I definitely hope to use technology in my classroom, and I think that the best way would be to look at online books! Having the child be able to identify what an online book is, is good for their future. They’ll be able to have that compare and contrasting type to work with.

TEKS 1.5(I) Recognize that different parts of a book such as cover, title page, and table of contents offer information. With this I want to make sure my students know what a book is, and where to find one. They need to be able to identify the differences between books, magazines, newspapers, ect. A great way to make sure the kids can do this is by taking a trip to the library and just explaining to them the differences with examples of each. I love to sing, and maybe I can get my kids to do so as well :) teaching with songs is a great way for kids to remember!

Title Page A title page is probably the most important part of a book and it is very important to make sure the students understand this. This is the first step of many in learning the different parts of a book. With using Blooms Taxonomy, I will have my students do worksheets/activities that help them locate where and what things mean on/in a book.

The Cover of a Book This is probably just as important as the title page, they both basically have the same information, but the cover will be what they see first when they pick up a book. Learning and knowing the different parts of a book can help a child read as well because they are actually beginning to understand the functions of a book. This is a great start; if the kids understand these two parts of a book, they won’t have hardly any issues identifying the other parts. Implying this, I want the kids to not to point the important parts out on their own, but in groups and partners as well. Making sure their friends are finding the same things they are. Sending the kids home with a book can really help improve this on their own time, and with family as well!

Table of Contents This is also very important for the kids to know and be able to navigate! If the students are able to use the table of contents, they pretty much have the navigation of a book down! It’s very important that the kids know what it’s used for, and why it’s a vital part of a book. Once the kids know all the parts of a book, I’ll have them create their own book out of construction paper with the important parts of a book! This will be a great keepsakes for the future of book learning!

Blooms Taxonomy Can you tell me what a book is? Where is the Title of the book found? Where do you look to find the different things in a book? I plan to help the kids answer and understand these questions by using activities, books(of course), worksheets, group work, and take-home activities. I also plan to incorporate technology! I want them to understand the importance and differences between technology and “old fashioned” things. Things I knew and learned when I was their age.

In Conclusion I really plan to love and care for each individual student that I teach! I want to make sure I understand every single one of their learning techniques, and how to accommodate to each of them. Making sure my students can read, and identify the parts of a book is very important for their futures in reading. And reading has always been a strong passion of mine!
