Climate Change Science and Solutions Creating innovative education tools for Native Americans and other rural Communities on the Colorado Plateau Northern Arizona University Climate Change Education (CCE): Climate Change Education Partnership (CCEP) Program, Phase I (CCEP-I)

What is Climate Science & Solutions Partnership?  CSSP is a National Science Foundation grant funded to create a climate change education program for secondary schools and communities on the Colorado Plateau.  CSSP will create a regionally and culturally relevant climate science and solutions curriculum for grades  CSSP will produce supplemental educational materials such as posters and climate change video clips.

What is Climate Science & Solutions Partnership? CSSP will be implemented in two phases: 1.Phase one will produce a high school field test for a climate change curriculum community education programs, and regional partnerships. 2.Phase two (pending funding) will produce and implement additional curriculum modules and will expand educational programs to communities and schools across the Colorado Plateau.

Our Partners 1. A team of climate scientists from Northern Arizona University comprising biological, earth, and political scientists 2. Education experts promoting STEM Learning (NAU Center for Science Teaching and Learning, Applied Indigenous Studies (AIS) & Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals(ITEP), & Biological Sciences Curriculum Studies (BSCS)) 3. Education practitioners from 6-12 schools that serve Native and rural students & the Diné and Hopi Department’s of Education 4. Regional community groups dedicated to developing regional solutions to climate change in northern Arizona and on the Navajo Nation, include the Black Mesa Water Coalition (BMWC) and Diné Binaanish Yá'át'éehgo Nooséél (DBYN)/Navajo Green Jobs (formerly the Navajo Green Economy Coalition, and Tó Nizhoní Aní).

Projected changes in median runoff for relativeto baseline, mapped by water region. Hatched areas indicate greater confidence due to strong agreement among models.

Colorado Plateau Carbon Connections Curriculum 10-day electronic curriculum supplemental unit Carbon cycle Carbon dioxide changes in the atmosphere Global and regional solutions Stories – in Navajo language

Curriculum Field Test Design 10 Teachers Student pre/post attitude and content Teacher implementation logs & interview Classroom observations

Field Test Data Inform curriculum development Provide feedback on how students learn Make recommendations for how to best involve native students and communities Data collection January – March, 2012 Data analysis March – April 2012

Kinłani Border Town Dormitory & Public Achievement “A youth civic engagement initiative focused on the most basic concepts of citizenship, democracy and public work. Public Achievement draws on the talents and desires of ordinary people to build a better world and to create a different kind of politics.” Combine the core concepts of PA & CCEP and provide an opportunity to learn about climate change, how they relate to it on a personal and global level. Kinlani students will have the opportunity to work with “coaches” who will serve as mentors and guides. Coaches will be recruited from CHEI (Continuing Higher Education Indigenously) Club, Applied Indigenous Studies (AIS) program, Climate Science &Solutions Masters Program, and Environmental Policy and Justice Department at NAU.

Questions ?? Are there any questions about the project or study design? What ideas do you have for community engagement on environmental topics such as climate change?
